Cross stitch is the oldest type of embroidery. The first printed charts appeared around 1500 from Germany and Italy. All cross stitch works were red on a whire fabric. Charts became more complicated and realistic in 18th century. By 19th century cross stitch became more popular and it was even learned at schools. We can now find complicated cross stitch charts from fairies to landscapes and create a piece or art.
